AI Chatbot Device Offers Companion Solution for Elderly Battling Loneliness

Loneliness, affecting millions across Europe, has prompted the development of innovative solutions, with over 10% of European Union residents reportedly feeling lonely most of the time, according to a recent European Commission report.

In the United States, Intuition Robotics has introduced ElliQ, an artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot device designed specifically to assist lonely elderly individuals. Claiming to reduce loneliness, more than 90% of ElliQ users report lower levels of social isolation.

Resembling a small table lamp with an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and swivels, ElliQ engages users in conversations, plays music, tells jokes, and remembers their interests. The device, priced at $600 per year with a $250 installation fee, has been distributed mainly through assistance agencies.

Joyce Loaiza, 81, finds the device entertaining, engaging in regular chats with ElliQ, which affectionately nicknames her "Jellybean." Other users, like Deanna Dezern and Marie Broadbent, share positive experiences, with ElliQ providing companionship, games, and assistance with health-related reminders.

CEO Dor Skuler explained that the idea for ElliQ originated from the need for companionship for his widowed grandfather, emphasizing the importance of friendship, companionship, and empathy in addressing loneliness.

Despite the reported success, some experts, such as Brigham Young University psychology professor Julianne Holt-Lunstad, express concerns. While acknowledging short-term benefits, Holt-Lunstad suggests that reliance on AI for companionship may hinder individuals from seeking human contact, potentially impacting mental well-being.

Intuition Robotics aims to distribute over 100,000 ElliQ devices within five years, focusing on adapting to seniors' personalities and interests to offer a unique and personalized solution to the pervasive issue of loneliness among the elderly.
