Amazon is making significant strides in bringing its Just Walk Out technology to more locations as the football season kicks off and a new school year begins. This fall, Amazon’s AI-powered checkout-free shopping system is set to debut at about two dozen new sites, including several high-profile NFL stadiums and U.S. college campuses.
The Just Walk Out system, first introduced in 2018, allows customers to shop without the need for traditional checkout lines. The technology uses a combination of sensors, computer vision, and machine learning to automatically detect when items are taken or returned to the shelves, and it charges the customer’s account when they leave the store.
This fall, Amazon is adding seven new Just Walk Out stores at Commanders Field in Washington, D.C., and six additional locations at Lumen Field in Seattle, bringing the total to 15 at Lumen Field — the highest number of any venue globally. Additionally, a new radio-frequency identification (RFID) store at Lumen Field will offer checkout-free purchasing for soft items such as clothing and fan gear. M&T Bank Stadium, home to the Baltimore Ravens, will also introduce its first Just Walk Out location.
These new installations are part of a broader expansion that includes existing locations at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, EverBank Stadium in Jacksonville, and Hard Rock Stadium in Miami. Amazon now has Just Walk Out locations in over 80 sports arenas and stadiums across the United States, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.
Amazon is also bringing Just Walk Out technology to eight new U.S. colleges and universities this fall, including Emory University, the University of Maine, Texas Christian University, and the University of Virginia. This expansion adds to the 30+ existing locations at higher education institutions, which also include Sussex University in the U.K. and Canberra Institute of Technology in Australia.
The technology has proven to be particularly popular in sporting venues, where fans appreciate the convenience of avoiding long lines. According to Amazon, during its debut at Lumen Field in 2022, the first concession stand using Just Walk Out saw a 60% increase in customer throughput, and sales per game doubled. Zach Hensley, vice president of operations for the Seattle Seahawks and general manager of Lumen Field, noted, “Just Walk Out is a seamless technology that lets fans get their food and drinks during a timeout as quickly as possible, so they can get back to their seats.”
The expansion of Just Walk Out technology reflects Amazon’s ongoing efforts to enhance convenience and efficiency in retail environments. With its continued deployment at prominent sports venues and educational institutions, the technology is set to further transform how people shop in busy and high-traffic areas.
