The Biden Administration has unveiled a $285 million investment plan for companies capable of constructing digital replicas of semiconductors.
Announced under the CHIPS for America Program, the initiative invites proposals from interested companies to develop virtual replicas, establishing the new CHIPS Manufacturing USA institute.
This institute will house digital twins of physical chips, providing a more accurate platform for testing and advancing chip production and assembly processes. The aim is to strengthen domestic tech supply chains and reduce research and development costs.
Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo emphasized the potential of digital twin technology, stating, “Digital twin technology can help to spark innovation in research, development, and manufacturing of semiconductors across the country – but only if we invest in America’s understanding and ability of this new technology.”
The initiative aims not only to position America as a leader in semiconductor digital twin technology but also to train future workers and researchers in utilizing digital twins for chip R&D and production.
Activities to be funded include research and development, establishment of physical and digital facilities, demonstration projects, and workforce training related to digital twins.
Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, Arati Prabhakar, highlighted President Biden’s commitment to semiconductor manufacturing, stating, “Under President Biden’s leadership, we’re writing a new chapter in semiconductor manufacturing in America.”
Briefings with potential companies will be held this month to discuss funding opportunities. However, applications will remain open until September to encourage broader participation.
The CHIPS Act, launched in 2022, aims to bolster American manufacturing, supply chains, and national security in emerging tech fields. The CHIPS Manufacturing USA institute will join 17 existing institutes supporting U.S. manufacturing.
