ElevenLabs, the startup specializing in AI-driven synthetic voice technologies, has announced that its Reader app is now available worldwide, offering support for 32 languages. Initially launched in June across the U.S., U.K., and Canada, the app allows users to upload text content—including articles, PDF documents, and e-books—and listen to it in a variety of languages and voices.
The expanded language support includes Portuguese, Spanish, French, Hindi, German, Japanese, Arabic, Korean, Italian, Tamil, and Swedish, among others. This enhancement is powered by ElevenLabs' Turbo v2.5 model, which improves the quality and reduces latency in text-to-speech conversion.
ElevenLabs, which achieved unicorn status earlier this year following an $80 million funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, offers an API for diverse applications like dubbing and text-to-speech. The company’s technology also powers voice interactions for the Rabbit r1 and text-to-speech features for AI search engine Perplexity and audio platforms Pocket FM and Kuku FM. The Reader app marks the company's first consumer-focused product.
In addition to broadening its language offerings, ElevenLabs has enriched its voice library with hundreds of new options and has licensed the voices of iconic actors such as Judy Garland, James Dean, Burt Reynolds, and Sir Laurence Olivier.
The Reader app faces competition from similar services like Speechify, which offers features like document scanning, Gmail and Canvas integrations, and voice cloning. Mozilla-owned Pocket and The New York Times’ Audm app also provide audio content options.
Looking ahead, ElevenLabs plans to introduce additional features to the Reader app, including offline support and audio snippet sharing capabilities, further enhancing the app’s usability and appeal to a global audience.
