GSMA Launches Responsible AI Maturity Roadmap to Guide Telecoms Industry
The GSMA has unveiled a Responsible AI (RAI) Maturity Roadmap to help telecom companies adopt ethical AI practices and unlock a potential $680 billion market opportunity over the next two decades. Developed in partnership with McKinsey and supported by 19 major MNOs, the roadmap provides a framework for assessing and advancing AI maturity in line with global standards.

The GSMA has introduced its Responsible AI (RAI) Maturity Roadmap, aiming to guide the telecom industry toward ethical and responsible AI adoption. The initiative is set to address a significant market opportunity estimated at $680 billion over the next 15 to 20 years. The roadmap represents a major commitment by the telecom sector to integrate AI responsibly and ethically.

Developed in collaboration with McKinsey and endorsed by 19 leading mobile network operators (MNOs) such as BT Group, Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange, Singtel, and Deutsche Telekom, the roadmap is a groundbreaking effort to unify the industry under a single responsible AI framework. This initiative aligns with global AI regulations and ethical standards established by organizations like the OECD and UNESCO.

This roadmap will now empower more MNOs to embrace AI in the knowledge that they are doing so responsibly and ethically,” said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA. “The telecoms industry is proud to lead the way as the first sector to commit to this approach.”

The RAI Maturity Roadmap is designed to help telecom companies assess their current AI maturity levels and identify opportunities for improvement. It provides structured guidance on advancing AI use responsibly, offering tools to measure progress and promoting best practices in AI governance.

The roadmap is built on five core dimensions critical for responsible AI use:

Vision, Values, and Strategic Goals: Aligning AI initiatives with the organization's overall objectives.

Operating Model: Embedding AI governance throughout the organization.

Technical Controls: Implementing AI solutions in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Collaboration with Third-Party Ecosystems: Engaging responsibly with external partners and stakeholders.

Corporate Change Management and Communication: Driving internal change and maintaining transparency in AI initiatives.

Best practices emphasized by the roadmap include fairness, human oversight, privacy, security, transparency, and environmental sustainability.

Telefónica CEO José María Álvarez-Pallete López commented on the initiative: “The speed with which AI has now become a central part of tech and telecoms operations demonstrates its power and undoubted value, but also the risks we must consider as an industry and the need to include ethics at the heart of AI to prevent its uncontrolled development.

The GSMA’s Responsible AI Maturity Roadmap marks a significant step in ensuring that AI technologies are developed and deployed in a manner that upholds ethical standards and regulatory compliance. As the telecom industry embraces AI, this roadmap will serve as a vital tool for navigating the complexities of responsible AI integration and achieving sustainable growth in the evolving digital landscape.
