Meta Connect 2024, a developer-centric event, commenced on September 25, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg delivering a keynote that highlighted the company's latest innovations in AI and the metaverse. The event unveiled new hardware and software advancements, including updates to Meta's Llama AI model, a new prototype of fully augmented reality (AR) glasses, and the launch of the Quest 3S headset.

Orion Holographic Glasses: In a dramatic reveal, Zuckerberg introduced the Orion Holographic Glasses, which Meta claims will become the company's first consumer full holographic AR glasses. Although they won’t be available for consumers immediately, the glasses were presented as a pivotal step in Meta’s AR ambitions. Featuring lightweight design, hand-tracking, eye-tracking, and an ambitious neural interface, early testers included notable figures such as Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The Orion glasses signify Meta's commitment to leading in the AR space.

Meta Quest 3S Headset: Meta officially launched the Quest 3S headset, priced at $299 for the 128GB model and $399 for the 256GB version. This wireless headset serves as a more affordable alternative to the Quest 3, which will see a price drop from $649 to $499. The Quest 3S is designed to be compatible with the existing library of Quest apps and games while emphasizing mixed-reality features. Early impressions of the Quest 3S indicate it aims to enhance user experience in both virtual and augmented reality environments, with shipments set to begin on October 15.

Additionally, Meta announced the discontinuation of the Quest 2 and Quest Pro headsets, with sales winding down through the end of the year.

Meta AI Gets Vocal: In another major development, Meta revealed that its AI can now interact vocally with users across Messenger, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram. This digital voice assistant will feature multiple voice options, including those of celebrities like Dame Judi Dench, John Cena, Awkwafina, Kristen Bell, and Keegan-Michael Key. This announcement follows OpenAI’s recent rollout of its Advanced Voice Mode feature, enhancing competition in the digital assistant space. Zuckerberg also shared that Meta AI has reached an impressive user base of 500 million.

Meta Connect 2024 marked a pivotal moment for Meta as it showcased its vision for the future of AI and the metaverse. With innovative hardware like the Orion glasses and Quest 3S headset, alongside enhancements in AI capabilities, Meta is positioning itself as a leader in these emerging fields. As the company continues to expand its offerings, the focus on user experience and accessibility will be crucial in the months ahead.
