Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has announced its decision to intensify efforts in combating misinformation ahead of numerous elections worldwide this year. In a bid to tackle the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI)-generated content, Meta revealed plans to label such content uploaded to its platforms and enforce penalties for users failing to disclose AI involvement.
The company, led by CEO Mark Zuckerberg, aims to deploy advanced tools to detect and label AI-generated photos across Instagram, Facebook, and Threads platforms in the upcoming months. Notably, Meta will extend its labeling initiative to encompass content originating from prominent AI providers such as Google, OpenAI, Microsoft, Adobe, Midjourney, and Shutterstock, expanding beyond its previous focus solely on internally generated AI images.
Meta's President of Global Affairs, Nick Clegg, outlined the company's strategy in a blog post, emphasizing the significance of addressing AI-generated misinformation as elections approach. Clegg underscored Meta's commitment to developing classifiers capable of automatically identifying AI-generated content, even without visible markers, to enhance detection capabilities and combat deceptive media dissemination.
The initiative comes in response to past criticisms of Meta's handling of misinformation during high-profile events, including the 2016 and 2020 US presidential elections and the 2019 COVID-19 pandemic.
