OpenAI announced on Tuesday the commencement of training for a new advanced artificial intelligence model that will succeed its current GPT-4 system, which powers the ChatGPT chatbot. This next-generation model is expected to significantly enhance capabilities as the company advances toward creating artificial general intelligence (AGI), a technology with human-like abilities.
In a blog post, the Microsoft-backed company expressed its anticipation that the "next frontier model" will usher in "the next level of capabilities." This effort is part of OpenAI's broader goal to develop AGI.
OpenAI also revealed the formation of a new safety and security committee. This committee will advise the board on critical safety and security issues related to its projects and operations. The company emphasized its commitment to building and releasing industry-leading models that prioritize both capabilities and safety, welcoming robust debates during this pivotal time.
The committee's initial responsibility will be to review and enhance OpenAI's safety processes and safeguards. At the end of a 90-day assessment period, the committee will share its recommendations. OpenAI plans to adopt these recommendations in ways that align with safety and security standards.
Members of the safety committee include OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Chairman Bret Taylor, and board members Adam D'Angelo and Nicole Seligman. The committee also features four of OpenAI’s technical and policy experts.
This move comes as OpenAI continues to lead in AI innovation, with its ChatGPT chatbot launched in November 2022 utilizing advanced reinforcement learning techniques.
