OpenAI, a prominent AI research organization, recently announced updates to its GPT-4 Turbo model to boost efficiencies for AI developers and maintain competitiveness in the evolving AI market.
With OpenAI surpassing US$2 billion in revenue, these updates target developers accessing the OpenAI model via API calls through ChatGPT Plus, Team, or Enterprise subscriptions.
The GPT-4 Turbo model now offers enhanced data processing capabilities, enabling text analysis in JSON format. This enhancement allows developers to automate tasks like sending emails, posting online, or making purchases directly from connected applications.
Moreover, GPT-4 Turbo has refined skills in writing, mathematics, logical reasoning, and coding. OpenAI notes, “Responses from ChatGPT with the new GPT-4 Turbo will be more direct, concise, and conversational.”
OpenAI also expanded GPT-4 Turbo's knowledge base, updating it with publicly available data up to December 2023, extending from its previous cut-off in April 2023.
To stay competitive against products like Google’s Gemini and Anthropic’s Claude 3 Opus, OpenAI has been proactive in refining its offerings. Earlier in January 2024, OpenAI adjusted its pricing structures, reducing prices for models like GPT-3.5 Turbo and enhancing the performance of GPT-4 Turbo based on user feedback.
Furthermore, OpenAI plans to augment GPT-4 Turbo’s vision analysis capabilities, facilitating more efficient image and video understanding in consumer apps like ChatGPT.
Under the leadership of Sam Altman, OpenAI is committed to advancing AI innovations. In February 2024, reports indicated OpenAI's intention to invest millions in developing its own AI chips due to GPU shortages and limitations hindering its expansion.
Altman emphasized the need for more AI infrastructure, stating, “Building massive-scale AI infrastructure and a resilient supply chain is crucial to economic competitiveness.”
