OpenAI has launched an initiative to provide nonprofits with discounted access to premium versions of ChatGPT, making the chatbot more accessible for various organizational needs. Under the "OpenAI for Nonprofits" initiative, nonprofits can obtain a ChatGPT Team license for $20 per user per month, a $10 discount from the standard rate.
For larger organizations, OpenAI offers a 50% discount on the Enterprise version of ChatGPT. This version includes priority access to the latest models, including GPT-4o, and features a customizable collaborative workspace.
“Whether it’s drafting grant proposals, refining data analysis, or tailoring communication strategies for diverse audiences, ChatGPT can serve as a powerful force multiplier for nonprofit organizations,” OpenAI stated in its announcement.
Discount eligibility will be determined through the nonprofit validation platform Percent. However, the program excludes nonprofit organizations focused on academics, religion, or government institutions. OpenAI also clarified that it will not provide a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) for nonprofits using the service, which is essential for entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).
Early adopters of this initiative include Serenas, a Brazilian organization combating violence against women. Serenas has been utilizing ChatGPT to draft grant proposals and adapt content between English and Portuguese. “With the human resources challenges we face in the nonprofit sector, ChatGPT has made connecting with international donors significantly simpler,” said Amanda Sadalla, founder of Serenas.
THINK South Africa, another early participant, uses ChatGPT to assist health officials in analyzing and gaining insights from data, developing a toolkit for designing public health programs in South Africa. Similarly, Team4Tech, focused on expanding digital education to underserved communities, has leveraged ChatGPT to enhance content evaluations. “ChatGPT enables us to curate resources more accurately, which helps us ensure our nonprofits have access to the best resources available,” noted Jody Britten, Team4Tech’s head of research and innovation.
Currently, the discounts apply solely to ChatGPT licenses, with no plans to extend these to the API. OpenAI intends to develop additional resources and tools specifically tailored to nonprofit needs.
