A cyber kidnapping scam has recently unfolded, leaving victims in distress as scammers exploit advancements in artificial intelligence to create lifelike illusions. In a shocking incident, Jennifer DeStefano, a mother from Arizona, received a call she believed was her daughter in desperate need.
"It was my daughter's voice, 100%," DeStefano recounted on "Fox & Friends Weekend." "It was the way she cried. It was the way she would talk to me."
The scammers, utilizing AI voice cloning technology, simulated a situation where DeStefano's daughter appeared to be in imminent danger. The conversation took a chilling turn when a man intervened, threatening harm and demanding money.
"Not only did he want money, he wanted to physically come kidnap me as well," DeStefano revealed. "He was trying to make arrangements when we were finally able to locate her."
This incident is part of a concerning trend where scammers leverage AI to create distressing scenarios for financial gain. In a similar case, a Chinese exchange student, Kai Zhuang, became a victim of such a scheme. His family, believing he was kidnapped, sent around $80,000 in ransom money. Fortunately, Zhuang was found safe, but the incident highlights the real-world impact of these scams.
"It sounded as if the phone was being ripped out of her hand in that process of the conversation," DeStefano noted, emphasizing the realistic nature of the scam. The use of AI allows scammers to convincingly imitate voices, making it challenging for victims to discern the authenticity of the calls.
Law enforcement officials are urging vigilance and caution in the face of these increasingly sophisticated scams. The incidents underscore the potential dangers not only in terms of financial loss but also the emotional distress inflicted on unsuspecting victims.
