Sony and Honda have joined forces to produce an electric car named Afeela, set to debut in 2025. This collaboration was revealed during Sony's recent press conference, where the company also disclosed a partnership with Microsoft to integrate AI and other technologies into the mobility industry.
The Afeela electric car, initially announced at CES a couple of years ago, showcased significant progress during the CES 2024 event. Izumi Kawanishi, representing Sony, presented the car on stage, utilizing a PlayStation 5 game controller for its demonstration.
Designed with gamers in mind, the Afeela features a front dashboard adorned with bright screens displaying captivating images. Additionally, the backseat is equipped with screens, offering passengers the opportunity to engage in gaming while on the move.
Microsoft executive Jessica Hawk shared insights on the collaboration during the event, emphasizing the integration of AI technology and Microsoft's Azure computing infrastructure. This collaboration marks a rare instance of cooperation between Sony and Microsoft, with the overarching goal of reshaping the relationship between people and mobility.
Incorporating expertise from Polyphony Digital, Sony aims to leverage gaming experiences in the development of the Afeela. The project is presented as more than just a car but as a gaming platform in itself.
To enhance safety features, Sony has partnered with Qualcomm, which will contribute advanced driver assistance system programs. Moreover, Sony showcased a new head-mounted display, designed for content creation, including virtual reality applications. This technology was also featured at the Siemens keynote.
As Sony takes strides into the electric car market, its collaborations with Honda, Microsoft, and other tech partners signal a significant shift towards integrating cutting-edge technologies into the future of mobility.
