The rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools has significantly impacted job seekers' approach to crafting resumes, with nearly half of them utilizing AI to enhance their application materials, according to a recent survey conducted by Canva in partnership with Sago.
The survey, which encompassed 5,000 hiring managers and 5,000 job seekers across multiple countries including the U.S., United Kingdom, India, Germany, Spain, France, Mexico, and Brazil, unveiled key insights into the evolving landscape of job searching and hiring practices. Notably, approximately 45% of job seekers reported leveraging generative AI to build, update, or refine their resumes.
Usage of AI in resume enhancement varied across regions, with the highest adoption rates observed in India (74%) and Brazil (50%), while France (33%) and Spain (34%) recorded lower usage figures.
Hiring managers exhibited a positive stance towards the integration of AI in application materials, with 90% of respondents deeming it acceptable. Among them, 46% advocated for minimal AI utilization to augment applicants' ideas and content, while 44% endorsed its use for creating any content.
Amy Schultz, Global Head of Talent Acquisition at Canva, emphasized the growing acceptance of AI among hiring managers and encouraged job seekers to leverage AI tools to enhance their resumes. Schultz highlighted the potential of AI to alleviate the challenges associated with job seeking, empowering candidates to present their qualifications effectively.
The survey also revealed notable advantages for applicants utilizing AI in resume creation, with 56% expressing high satisfaction with the visual appearance of their resumes compared to 33% of non-users. Additionally, 91% of AI users reported having the necessary tools, underscoring the effectiveness of AI in facilitating resume development.
Looking ahead, a significant majority (81%) of respondents who have not yet utilized generative AI expressed interest in doing so to update their resumes or create new versions in the future, highlighting the growing trend of AI adoption among job seekers.
While AI tools offer valuable assistance in resume crafting, Schultz emphasized the importance of verifying the output to align with candidates' individual tone and experience. With recruiters increasingly favoring resumes with visual elements, Schultz highlighted the role of tools like Canva's AI-powered Magic Write in enhancing resume templates to capture recruiters' attention effectively.
As the recruitment landscape continues to evolve, candidates are urged to leverage AI tools strategically to create compelling resumes that resonate with recruiters in an increasingly competitive job market.
Ultimately, the integration of AI in resume creation represents a significant shift in job-seeking strategies, offering candidates innovative tools to differentiate themselves and secure coveted job opportunities in an evolving employment landscape.
