Target has introduced its own generative AI chatbot, Store Companion, aimed at supporting staff in answering customer queries and managing store operations efficiently.
Available as a handheld device app, Store Companion utilizes Target’s internal data, including frequently asked questions, to provide quick responses and assist team members with daily tasks. This initiative is part of Target’s commitment to leveraging advanced technologies to enhance customer service and operational efficiency.
Mark Schindele, Target’s chief stores officer, emphasized the transformative impact of generative AI: "Generative AI is [a] game-changing technology and Store Companion will make daily tasks easier and enable our team to respond to guests' requests with confidence and efficiency."
Early feedback from staff has been positive, with users encouraged to provide suggestions for further refining the chatbot’s capabilities.
Jake Seaquist, a store director at Target, noted the practical benefits: "Streamlining day-to-day tasks goes a long way with our team members and adds up to more time spent with guests and a better guest experience across the store."
Target has been actively integrating generative AI across its platforms, including enhancing online shopping experiences with AI-powered search capabilities like Guided Search. This feature allows customers to use conversational language to find relevant products, enriching their browsing and shopping experience on Target.com.
Looking ahead, Target plans to expand its use of generative AI with additional tools for staff, starting with deployment at its Minneapolis headquarters.
The rollout of Store Companion underscores Target’s commitment to innovation in retail and its dedication to providing exceptional service through advanced technology solutions.
