A recent survey by Canva, coinciding with Teacher Appreciation Week, highlights the growing issue of burnout among K-12 educators in the U.S. A significant 35% experience burnout daily, while 83% feel it at least some days. This strain is leading many teachers to contemplate career changes, with 57% considering quitting or changing schools, and 64% pondering leaving the profession altogether.
Carly Daff, from Canva, stresses the detrimental impact of burnout on absenteeism, classroom patience, job satisfaction, and instructional quality. Over half of teachers have missed school days due to burnout, with many feeling overwhelmed and less patient with students.
To address these challenges, teachers are turning to AI tools for assistance. The survey reveals that 42% of teachers have already integrated AI into their classrooms, driven predominantly by millennial and Gen Z educators. Newer teachers, with less than five years of experience, show the highest AI adoption rates at 59%.
Educators utilize AI primarily to refine learning materials, such as customizing lesson plans and creating engaging presentations. Common AI applications include text translation, summarization, data visualization, and content creation.
Those who have incorporated AI praise its effectiveness in tackling teacher pain points, improving work efficiency, and alleviating burnout. A staggering 92% of AI users find it helpful, while 60% believe it enhances efficiency and 58% feel it combats burnout.
Even among teachers yet to embrace AI, optimism about its potential remains high. A majority (56%) believe AI can reduce burnout, particularly among younger educators and those with limited experience. Furthermore, 68% express willingness to try AI for curriculum planning, especially kindergarten and elementary teachers.
