Patients experiencing musculoskeletal (MSK) issues, like back pain, can access the service, known as Flok Health, through referrals from community or primary care healthcare settings or through self-referral. The platform, co-founded by former professional rower Finn Stevenson, utilizes real-time patient information to tailor treatment plans and provide personalized care.
While some industry voices express reservations about AI’s ability to replicate the expertise of fully trained physiotherapists, proponents of the initiative argue that AI can enhance access to care and alleviate pressure on clinicians. Euan McComiskie from the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy acknowledges AI's potential as a complement to traditional physiotherapy but emphasizes the importance of maintaining patient safety and trust.
Initial trial results suggest promising outcomes, with over 80% of participants reporting symptom improvement during treatment. The digital clinic has also demonstrated efficiency in reducing wait times for in-person appointments, as evidenced by a trial at Cambridge University hospitals.
Flok's distinction lies in its status as the first and only digital MSK provider approved by the CQC. Moreover, it has obtained medical device clearance under MHRA regulations for automating triage, assessment, and treatment of back pain. The platform's autonomous assessment and triage processes ensure timely access to physiotherapy while mitigating risks through rigorous testing protocols.
