Wimbledon's AI Experiment Faces Initial Hurdles

Wimbledon's venture into AI-generated content hit a stumbling block during the championships' opening day, as its new feature, Catch Me Up, encountered several inaccuracies. Rolled out on Wimbledon’s app and website, the feature erroneously labeled Emma Raducanu as the British No 1, despite her ranking as No 3, and misreported her match victories this year. Another gaffe described a match between Zhang Shuai and Daria Kasatkina as an "eagerly anticipated encounter," despite Zhang's recent struggles.

Initially praised at an IBM event for its potential to deliver insightful storytelling, Catch Me Up struggled with errors, including American spellings inconsistent with Wimbledon's style. Despite these issues, Wimbledon emphasized that the AI model, developed in collaboration with IBM, will improve with ongoing human oversight.

Last year, Wimbledon faced criticism for AI-powered commentary, a move condemned by former player Annabel Croft as threatening human jobs and lacking the emotional depth of human commentators.
