YouTube Introduces New AI Tools to Protect Creators' Likeness and Voices
YouTube is developing new tools to give creators enhanced control over AI-generated content featuring their likeness and voices. Set for a pilot program early next year, these tools will help detect and manage AI-generated vocals and visual content, ensuring better protection of creators' intellectual property.

YouTube is rolling out new tools designed to help creators better manage AI-generated content that mimics their voices and appearances. Announced in a blog post on September 5, the platform is refining technology that will allow YouTubers to automatically detect and manage synthetic vocals simulating their voices.

The new synthetic singing ID tool will integrate with YouTube’s Content ID system, which has been in place since 2007 to help artists and creators claim copyright and license their content. This upcoming feature is part of a broader effort to enhance creator control over their intellectual property in the age of AI.

In addition to the voice detection tool, YouTube is developing a second tool aimed at helping actors, musicians, athletes, and other creators manage AI-generated visuals that replicate their faces. This tool is expected to offer similar levels of protection as the synthetic singing ID tool.

These advancements come amid growing concerns about the use of AI in generating content that replicates individuals' likenesses and voices. Social media platforms, including YouTube, are increasingly updating their policies to address the issues surrounding deepfakes and AI voice clones. However, these platforms are also advancing their own AI-driven content creation tools, such as YouTube’s Dream Screen for YouTube Shorts.

YouTube has stated that it uses uploaded content to enhance its recommendation systems and develop generative AI features like auto dubbing. To support creators, the platform is incorporating safeguards into its AI tools to prevent misuse and may block prompts that violate its policies or touch on sensitive topics.

The platform has also addressed concerns about unauthorized use of creator content, affirming that accessing content without permission violates its Terms of Service and undermines the value provided to creators. YouTube is investing in systems to detect and prevent unauthorized access, including measures to block entities that scrape content from the platform.

“We’ll continue to employ measures to ensure that third parties respect these terms, including ongoing investments in the systems that detect and prevent unauthorized access,” YouTube stated.
