Knowing how to use Google Bard could one day be an essential skill. Google's Bard AI is here and aims to change the way we search the internet every day. While the Microsoft-backed ChatGPT also utilizes an AI-assisted search, Bard lets you do so with the world's most popular search engine, Google Chrome.
Bard uses a different Large Language model (LLM) to chatGPT and the New Bing. Instead, Bard features Google's own LaMDA model, now boosted by further integration with its larger PaLM model providing 540 billion language parameters.
Like almost all AI, Bard is learning all the time, and Google is constantly updating it with new features, which can be seen in the Experiment Updates tab. That's right, Bard is still an experiment, it's very much a work-in-progress so don't expect every answer to be 100% correct. But compared to traditional search engines, it's capable of some very special tasks, like writing stories, compiling to-do lists, and even offering travel advice.
While Bard is now available to the public you will still need to sign up for the waitlist. This can be done for free using your Google account, and don't worry, those who sign up will normally be given access within an hour. Joining the waitlist is very simple:
Go to bard.google.com(opens in new tab) , this will also be the URL to access the tool once you're in.
2. Select Join Waitlist
Select the Join Waitlist button. Note: You must have a Google account that has been confirmed as being for a user over 18.
Check your email for confirmation you are on the list. You will also receive an email when access has been granted.
Once you’ve gotten access to Google Bard, it’s time to see what it’s made of.
Go to bard.google.com(opens in new tab) and now you should be immediately taken to the AI tool. If not, check you have been granted access.
2. Enter a query or search term
Enter a question or search term into the search box and then hit enter.
3. Wait for a response
Wait for the AI to respond. You can then either continue the conversation or select Google It to use the traditional search engine.
There you go, one day you could be using Bard (or another form of AI) for pretty much every task you could imagine. Again, however, we are still in the early days of AI search tools. Google itself admits that Bard is still learning and might get confused or make mistakes from time to time.
